Job Description Job Description Salary: $12 per hour Summer Day Camp Instructor Job Summary: The City of Athens is seeking Summer Day Camp Instructors to assist with the daily operation of eight one-week summer youth camps for children ages 512. Camps are held at the Athens Community Center and include themed activities, walking field trips, and scheduled visits to the Athens City Pool. Instructors are responsible for supervising campers, assisting with activity planning and implementation, and maintaining a safe, structured, and engaging camp environment. This is a seasonal position for an eight-week summer camp program running from June 8, 2026 through August 7, 2026, with no camp held June 29, 2026 through July 3, 2026. A mandatory week of staff training will be held June 1, 2026 through June 5, 2026. The position is scheduled for 40 hours per week, with 8-hour shifts occurring between 7:30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. This is a seasonal position expected to last about 120 days and is covered by the Fair Labor Standards Act. The starting pay rate is $12.00/hr. Applications will be accepted until the position is filled. Job Duties: Assist in planning and implementing activities for assigned camps and camper groups Supervise campers during all planned and unplanned activities, including walking field trips and pool visits Set up, maintain, and clean up equipment and supplies used for camp programming Lead and actively participate in daily camp activities Provide leadership to assigned groups to ensure high-quality programming Foster positive, respectful, and inclusive interactions among campers and staff Serve as a positive role model through professional conduct, enthusiasm, and engagement Ensure the safety and well-being of all campers at all times Maintain clean and organized camp areas Follow all applicable laws, policies, and procedures of the Athens Community Center and the City of Athens Maintain effective working relationships with staff, parents or guardians, campers, and the public Perform related duties as assigned Job Specifications and Qualifications: High school diploma or equivalent required. Commitment to working the entire summer camp season strongly preferred. Experience working with children in a camp, school, or recreational setting preferred. Experience working with kindergarten through sixth grade preferred. Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills. Current CPR and First Aid certification required prior to the start of camp (can be completed during training week). Completion of a required training in communicable diseases and child abuse prevention. Successful completion of BCI and FBI background checks Physical Demands Ability to stand, walk, and actively participate in indoor and outdoor activities for extended periods. Ability to lift and carry equipment and supplies associated with camp activities. Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions. Applicant must be able to participate in all camp activities. This position requires standing and walking several hours each day. It will also require bending, squatting, kneeling, climbing stairs, reaching above shoulders, pushing/pulling, and working outdoors in various weather conditions. The City may consider any other equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
